The muted tones of limestone are perfect for today’s more casual and comfortable lifestyles. Generally these soft beiges and tans, either polished or honed, are appropriate for bathrooms, fireplaces, countertops, and less traveled flooring.
Limestones are sedimentary rocks that are formed at the bottom of lakes and seas as silt and organic matter settle to the bottom. As more and more layers build up over thousands of years, adding more and more weight, the heat and pressure cause chemical reactions to take place and harden the sediments into solid stone. Limestone is generally softer and less dense than granite and more homogeneous in appearance.

Shellstone - is a sedimentary stone found in Florida and Central America that shares the characteristics of limestone, but also has fossils and shells embedded in its body. Shell stone is a relatively soft porous stone that retains less heat than denser stone, and is often used in exterior applications, especially around swimming pools.

Care & Maintenance

A regular maintenance regimen will help your limestone become more resistant to scratching and wear. Limestone is sensitive to harsh chemicals. Do NOT use vinegar or any cleaners containing acids or strong alkaline agents. Perfect Tile recommends wiping or mopping limestone with warm water, or a pH-balanced neutral cleaner, followed by dry-wiping. If you spill acidic juices or alcohol on limestone, you should blot dry immediately. Acid-based foods, such as citrus or tomatoes, can etch the polished finish of limestone. Do NOT place hot items directly onto a limestone countertop. To prevent alkaline and soap-scum buildup, use a squeegee in the the shower area.

A quality impregnating sealer is recommended for all limestone installations. This sealer penetrates the stone and allows the stone to breathe and permits more of the stone’s natural beauty to shine through. Unsealed limestone is more susceptible to absorbing moisture, dirt and cleaning chemicals. Limestone should be sealed at installation, and Perfect Tile recommends a reapplication every 1-2 years.
